Amountof an Ordinary Annuity
When peopleinvest, they usually do not simply deposit one lump sum and wait several yearsfor it to earn interest. Most wise investors make regular payments (that are paymentsof equal value made at equal time periods), often deducted directly from theirpaycheques.  Investments of this type are called annuities.  Anannuity is a sum of money paid as a series of regular payments. For anordinary annuity, each payment is made at the end of each payment period, orpayment interval. A payment interval is the time between successive payments. The word annuity implies annual or yearly payments, however, payment intervalsmay be any length of time.
Time line
Time line is adiagram used to illustrate the cash flow of an annuity.

The total amount, A,at the time of the last payment of an annuity can be determined using theformula:

PresentValue of an Ordinary Annuity
Anna and Jimiare approaching retirement and are putting their finances in order.  Theyhave worked hard and invested their earnings so that they now have a largeamount of money on which to live. They consult a financial advisor at theirbank, and together they consider whether Anna and Jimi have enough money toallow them to live comfortably for the rest of their lives by making regularwithdrawals from an account. To do this they calculate the present value of anannuity based on Anna and Jimi’s projected living expenses.
The amount ofmoney invested now for an ordinary annuity is the present value of the annuity. The annuity provides equal payments at the end of each equal time interval. Thepresent value can be calculated for a known interest rate, compounding period, number of payments, and amount of each payment.
You will recallthe amount is based on the interest rate per compounding period, for example:
Saving $100 permonth for five years = $6,000 + interest, whereas
Saving $100 perweek for five years = $26,000 + interest.

In the previouslearning activity, problems were posed in which regular payments are made intoan account that grows to a large future amount.

The formula forthe present value of an annuity:
